Hoang Duc Dzung (b. 1971, Hanoi, Vietnam) is a Vietnamese painter whose work is characterised by a quiet, contemplative atmosphere. Working primarily in oil on canvas, he is known for landscapes and figurative paintings in which light, space and colour are used to create a sense of stillness and ambiguity.

Dzung graduated from the Vietnam University of Fine Arts in 1998 and later completed a Master's degree there in 2009. He is also a lecturer at the National University of Art Education in Vietnam, where he continues to contribute to the education of a new generation of artists.

Artistic Practice

Oil on canvas is Dzung's principal medium. His paintings often have a restrained, predominantly monochromatic palette, creating an atmosphere that is calm, reflective and sometimes dreamlike.

His landscapes frequently depict rivers, fields and open spaces at transitional times of day, particularly early morning or evening. Rather than presenting a landscape as a precise description of a particular place, Dzung uses light, mist, colour and simplified forms to create an impression of memory and atmosphere.

His figurative paintings, including his nude studies, share this sense of quietness. The figures are often placed within spacious, subdued compositions, allowing the viewer to focus less on narrative and more on mood, light and the relationship between the figure and its surroundings.

There is an intentional ambiguity in Dzung's work. His paintings often seem to exist somewhere between reality and imagination, stillness and movement, visibility and obscurity. Instead of providing a definitive interpretation, he leaves space for the viewer to bring their own emotions and experiences to the work.

As Dzung has expressed: “Paint more, speak less, and be true to yourself and your feeling.” This understated approach is central to his paintings. Rather than relying on dramatic subject matter or vivid colour, he creates works that invite a slower and more contemplative way of looking.

Career

Dzung began exhibiting his work in Vietnam in the 1990s and has since participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions internationally. His first solo exhibition was held at Zee Stone Gallery in Hong Kong in 2001. Further solo exhibitions followed in Vietnam, including Peaceful Moment at Apricot Gallery in Ho Chi Minh City in 2007 and Model at Thanh Mai Gallery in 2008.

His group exhibitions have taken place in Vietnam, the UK, Italy and the United States, among other countries. His work has been shown in London at Kings Road Gallery and has also appeared at exhibitions including II Drago e la Farfalla at the Vittoriano Museum in Rome and an exhibition at JIA MODERNE in Boston.

More recently, Dzung has exhibited in London with Hanoi Art House, including Colours of the Motherland in Mayfair in 2023. His work has also been presented by Hanoi Art House at the Affordable Art Fair in London for several years, alongside works by several leading Vietnamese artists.

 

Dzung's paintings are held in private and institutional collections internationally, with collectors and organisations in countries including the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Australia, the United States, Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates.

Today, Hoang Duc Dzung continues to develop a quietly expressive body of work in which landscape and the human figure become vehicles for exploring atmosphere, emotion and the passing quality of light.
