Le Thanh Son is one of Vietnam’s established contemporary artists, renowned for his distinctive use of colour, light and expressive brushwork.

Born in Hanoi in 1962, Son developed a passion for painting from an early age. At the age of four, he joined the Young Pioneers’ Club, where he began to pursue his artistic interests. He graduated from Hanoi College of Drama and Cinematography in 1986 and has since devoted himself to painting.

Son works primarily in oil on canvas, using broad, expressive brushstrokes and richly applied layers of paint. His bold and spontaneous technique combines energy with sensitivity, creating a distinctive visual language that draws on Impressionism while retaining a strong Vietnamese character. His approach has influenced a younger generation of Vietnamese artists.

Nature is at the heart of Son’s artistic inspiration. He finds beauty and lyricism in the familiar landscapes of everyday Vietnam: village scenes, lotus and duckweed ponds, simple pagoda gates, fields of flowers and the old streets of Hanoi shaded by mature trees. He is particularly fascinated by the changing colours and atmosphere of nature throughout the four seasons.

Rather than simply reproducing what he sees, Son transforms ordinary scenes through imagination and his instinctive use of colour. Light and shadow play an important role in his compositions, allowing familiar landscapes to become expressive and dreamlike interpretations of place and memory.

For Son, painting is both an act of creativity and a way of exploring emotion through colour. His works are characterised by a dynamic interplay of light, shade and richly layered hues, creating an atmosphere that is both vibrant and contemplative.

Over several decades dedicated to his artistic practice, Son has participated in numerous exhibitions and received awards in Vietnam and internationally. His paintings are held in museums and private collections in Vietnam and overseas. His collectors have included former US President Bill Clinton and Bill Gate.

Son is a member of the Vietnam Fine Arts Association.
